The Abreact Performance Space announces its 11th theatre season 2011/2012

Detroit, Mi. – The Abreact Performance Space embarks upon its eleventh season of contemporary/original/black box theatre. Season 11 features four shows in total, of which two are locally written original comedies, book-ended by two contemporary pieces by masters in their own right.

September 9th until October 1st, 2011
“Bobby Gould in Hell” (Mamet)
“The Devil and Billy Markham” (Silverstein)

The season opens with one-act plays by David Mamet and Shel Silverstein show cased as “Oh, Hell!” The 1st of 2 plays “Bobby Gould in Hell” (Mamet) an obscure lesser known comedy by the same mind that brought you “American Buffalo”, “A life in the Theatre”, “Oleanna” and many other American contemporary works. Second up is “The Devil and Billy Markham” (Silverstein), Mr. Silverstein, a darkly comedic and whimsical poet, takes you on a fun journey in this one man show. Directed by Charles Reynolds.

“Hot Mess Chronicles III” (McGettigan)

“Hot Mess Chronicles III” is the latest installation of equally parts ghoulish and goofy Halloween comedy! A veritable study in short form comedy, this is a showcase of locally written original work by locally residing original talent. Directed by Mike McGettigan.

“Burn the Red Banner: Or, Let the Rebels Have Their Fun” (Vitellla)

“Burn the Red Banner: Or, Let the Rebels Have Their Fun” is a collection of plays by Michigan playwright Franco Vitellla which riff on the Russian comedy aesthetic in a delightfully absurd and hilarious manner. These pieces are performed by a small ensemble of actors portraying various parts in this hodgepodge of plays. Excerpts from this play were presented at Magenta Giraffe Theatre Company’s annual staged reading festival to uproarious laughter and overwhelming approval – and a unanimous desire to see the entire piece staged. And their wish is our command! Don’t miss out on unique and hysterical world premiere from a local playwright. Directed by Frannie Shepherd-Bates.

April 13th until May 5th 2012
“Endgame” (Beckett)

The final show of the season, originally published in 1957, “Endgame” is considered one of Samuel Beckett’s most important works. In a tiny house by the sea with nothing left outside – no sea, no sun, no clouds – live the mutually dependent protagonists Hamm, an aged blind master who cannot stand, and Clov, his servant who cannot sit. Their days playing out like the end of a chess match, they fight, flatter, thrust and parry, Clov always trying to withdraw from the game, while Hamm insists on finishing the matter once and for all. Directed by John Jakary (formerly of the Zeitgeist Theater) to close out the 2011-2012 season.
